: Films & Grains Issue 2

Issue 2 of Films & Grains magazine came out today. It’s a lovely quality new addition to the analogue photography magazine market and I’m proud to have two of my images in it, along with some beautiful polaroids by my friend Erin McGuire.

I also found out today that “Grey Wings” was selected in the Fine Art/Abstract (non-professional) category of Prix de la Photographie Paris, and “The Changeling” was chosen by Blue Mitchell for the online gallery annexe of the “Wonderland: Photographic Fantasies” exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery, and will also be included in the exhibition catalogue.

All in all, a very creatively rewarding day

My first stab at lith printing

Last Friday I did a 3 hour lith printing workshop at Zoom In Photography in Oval, London. I’ve long been an admirer of lith prints and finally got a chance to have a go at them.

Basically, a lith print is a print which has been over-exposed by a couple of stops and then developed in a diluted lith developer – development can take a while and you need to keep a close eye on the print and keep agitating. You’ll also need lith paper as not all papers are suitable. Luckily Zoom In had discovered an old box of Oriental Seagull (now discontinued) and its a wonderful paper.

This is an old neg so it was interesting to see it printed up anything other than silver gelatin. The lith process definitely gave it a totally different mood: grainier with a different hue and tone.

In retrospect, I think most of the prints I made could have come out of the developer a little earlier, they’re all slightly darker than I would have hoped, but lith printing development is rather unpredictable and even when I printed two of the same image they both came out quite different from the other. I definitely need to go back and spend some time honing the process which is time consuming but artistically rewarding.

Crouch End Open Studios 2011 coming to a close

The past fortnight has been madly busy for all of us CEOS members, getting our artwork up at the gallery, working on our open studio venues and meeting and greeting the public. The group exhibition at The Original Gallery closes tomorrow at 5pm – still time to get one last look in if you want.. our private view party last Wednesday was great fun.. Crouch Ender Mari Wilson sang for us (I remember when she had a big hit in the early 80′s with her song “Just what I always wanted” – I was still in school), local restaurant Bistro Aix provided the delicious food, and Adam from Top My Cake made us a yummy bespoke cake in the shape of blue Adidas trainers to complement CEOS member Liz Brown’s Shoe String project.

My Marrakesh prints will remain in situ at Honeycomb (39 Topsfield Parade, London N8) for the forseeable future. It’s been great meeting so many local art lovers and making lots of new friends and acquaintances.

And now.. onto new projects.. I’ve been busy tinkering with vintage camera parts and removing and replacing lenses, shooting some test shots so I can begin working on new ideas over the Summer..

Susan Burnstine’s “Within Shadows” & more..

Susan Burnstine‘s long-anticipated first monograph – Within Shadows - is now available for pre-order via her website – the books should be available in June and if you order direct from Susan’s website you’ll get a signed copy. There is also a limited edition book and print set that comes with an 8×8″ print of one of three of Susan’s wonderful images. I nabbed the magical “Threshold” which I’ve always loved. Well worth snapping up one of the book & print editions - starting off at a very affordable $150 these are likely to sell out quickly bearing in mind that Susan rarely releases print editions smaller than 12×12″ in size – these will become instant collector’s items.

I’ve known and admired Susan and her inimitable photographic art for many years and watched her go from strength to strength – I wish her every success with this book which will be launched at the Venice Biennale, it really couldn’t happen to a nicer gal!

Life Support Japan USA and Wallspace Gallery have now launched the 6th and penultimate gallery of prints for $50 each – over $50,000 has now been raised for Direct Relief and Habitat for Humanity. A simply amazing achievement by Crista Dix and Wallspace Gallery, Aline Smithson and the photo community who all pulled together to make this possible. There are still lots of gorgeous prints available from some very collectable photographers who often sell their work for much more than these special affordably priced editions – please take a look and nab something that takes your fancy. They make wonderful gifts.

My Marrakech prints are now on display/for sale at my Open Studio venue: Honeycomb, 39 Topsfield Parade, Crouch End, London N8 as part of Crouch End Open Studios. The main “taster” exhibition for all 22 artists from CEOS opens on Saturday 30th April and is on until Saturday 14th May in The Original Gallery, Crouch End – with our Open Weekend taking place on 7th and 8th May.

Sadly, I missed out on buying prints by Joni Sternbach, Tami Bone and Arslan Ahmedov because I was asleep when they went online and then they quickly sold out, oh well. I’m happy to have nabbed these beauties to adorn my walls and to have contributed to such an amazing cause - and also to have donated a special edition of ten 8×8″ prints of ”Grey Wings” (sold out) for the sale - in excess of $50,000 has now been raised by Life Support Japan USA and there are still many beautiful prints available to buy at the bargain price of $50 each. Still time to hop over there and nab yourself some amazing art for your walls!

Plastic + Film

Ferris Wheel

“Ferris Wheel” – one of the images from my ”Grey Wings” series has been selected for Plastic + Film: An Exhibition of Toy Camera Photography at The Nave Gallery from April 30th-May 21st.

Two other images from the same series will be exhibited at The Original Gallery in Crouch End, London N8 as part of Crouch End Open Studios from April 30th.

Life Support Japan UK update

As of today 21 prints have sold and raised £630 for The British Red Cross Tsunami Appeal. I’m thrilled with the response, and have been overawed by the generosity of the photographers who have donated prints for this sale and made it happen.

I’ve decided not to upload any more images for the time being and once the present ones have sold I will be making the donation to the Red Cross. Sadly, there just aren’t enough hours in the day for me to donate time to the online site, my paying day job and my upcoming Open Studios exhibitions. I don’t know how Crista and Aline (Life Support Japan USA) do it because I’m worn out from it all already! However, it has been a wonderful experience and I’m so pleased to have not only been able to organise this to raise some money for a worthy cause but also to have met some really wonderful people in the process.

I have to thank the photo communities FADU (Film & Darkroom User) and Filmwasters – many members from both who donated prints, especially Dave Miller who not only donated 4 gorgeous prints but also bought another.

In fact, I loved Dave’s “Sacred” photograph so much I bought it myself and it now hangs in my living room and looks fantastic.

I shall continue to fund raise for various Tsunami Relief charities and support Life Support Japan USA. On that note, please do take a look at Wallspace Gallery’s ongoing print sales - there are now 3 galleries of donated prints online and another to follow this weekend. and Still time to get yourself some wonderful art for only $50 a print. I’ve already nabbed Jennifer Shaw, Noelle Swan Gilbert, Ann Pallesen and John Bridges – my flat is rapidly turning into an art gallery!
